Chicago FarmWorks

For many low income communities, affordable food, especially affordable healthy food, is in short supply. To help address this problem, we partner with the City of Chicago, NeighborSpace, Rush University Medical Center, Breakthrough Urban Ministries, and Our Lady of the Angels Community Pantry, to operate a 2.8-acre urban farm in Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood. We grow, harvest and distribute our produce with crucial support from our volunteers and our transitional job participants who are working to overcome barriers to secure permanent full-time jobs.

In 2024, we made a difference in the community by:

  • Harvesting 27,000 servings of fresh, organic produce representing an estimated $15,000 in donated food value
  • Distributing more than 13,000 servings across East and West Garfield Park through Our Lady of the Angels, 8,000 servings through Breakthrough Ministries, and nearly 4,000 servings through Rush University Medical Center’s Food is Medicine initiative. The balance was donated through local organizations or directly to community neighborhoods.
  • Providing economic opportunity to 41 participants enrolled in the transitional jobs program.
  • Engaging with over 400 volunteers who contributed to the mission. Nearly 100 volunteer groups were nonprofit, school, corporate, hospital, and community partners.

With your help, we hope to serve more people and continue beautifying the community, while bringing fresh, healthy produce to those who need it most.
